Anti-Inflammatory Breakfast
Shared by Dr. Antonio Flaquer

As I tell my patients in East Dallas a healthy, anti-inflammatory breakfast is a great way to help you start your day. But just like every other meal, it needs to be a nutritious meal in order to get your day started the right way. If it’s something that is inflammatory, it will make a huge difference in your day and not in the good way. Just like when we eat burgers or pizza’s for lunch, we usually feel very sluggish afterwards and lethargic and it’s because of the fats that aren’t consumed within those certain meals. So just like your breakfast, if you eat something very sugary or fattening it will cause you to have that sugar rush which then makes you crash a lot harder and sooner meaning your energy levels just crash and it’s hard for you to get going with the day and be productive. So what you put into your body is very important and honestly dictates how your day is going to go.
Here is a quote from the research findings about the facts and benefits of oats.
“Oats represent a uniquely nutritious food with an excellent lipid profile and high amounts of soluble fibre. There are numerous steps in the milling process, the most important of which are dehulling to expose the digestible groat, heat processing to inactivate enzymes that cause rancidity, and cutting, rolling or grinding to convert the groat into a product that is a more convenient food, more able to be rapidly cooked and/or incorporated into other food products.”
There are many principles to staying healthy and what we put into our bodies is one of the key factors. What we eat determines how our bodies will function. If we eat nothing but waffles, pancakes, and cereal every morning, then our bodies will always stay in a state of inflammation.
Ingredients
- ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
- ½ cup milk, any milk will work, but I like unsweetened almond milk
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt or 1/4 cup more milk, I like using Greek yogurt
- 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey, or your preferred sweetener
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds, optional
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
- pinch of sea salt
- toppings of choice: fruit, nut butter, nuts, seeds
- 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips
Instructions
- Add oats, milk, yogurt, maple syrup, chia seeds, vanilla and sea salt into a jar or storage container with a lid. Stir ingredients together. Place in the fridge overnight. If you’re in a rush you can shorten the soak time to 2-4 hours.
- The next morning (or when ready to eat), remove lid and give oats a big stir. If they seem too thick you can add a little more milk to loosen the mixture. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy. You can eat the oats straight from the jar or pour into a bowl for serving.
- Overnight oats should last up to 5 days in the fridge in a sealed airtight container.
- Stir 1 Tablespoon of chocolate chips into the overnight oat mixture when prepping and then sprinkle oats with remaining chocolate chips to serve.
