Avocado to Improve Heart Health

Video by Dr. Trent Yeomans

As a Chiropractor, my job is to help people decrease neck and back pain by getting to the root cause of the pain. As I often tell my patients nutrition is a great way to start minimizing pain and staying healthy. Avocados are great for improving your heart health, digestion, immunity from diseases, and a great antioxidant. I have tried many ways over the years to eat avocados. I never can find a recipe or a certain way to enjoy them, but I always continue to eat them because the research on them being an absolute superfood is undeniable. In a study done by Wang et al. they wanted to see the effect of adding one avocado in your diet per day on your cardiovascular health. What they found was that in the group who ate just one avocado and day they significantly decreased their circulating blood LDL levels or their “bad” cholesterol after just 12 weeks. Studies like these are why I always try my best to get avocados into my diet to stay healthy and pain free. Here is an avocado banana smoothie recipe that I love to share with my patients in East Dallas for this superfood.

“Oxidative modification of LDL particles plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Oxidized LDL (oxLDL) is taken up by macrophages through the upregulated scavenger receptor, leading to substantial cholesterol accumulation and foam cell formation.”

“Avocados have a unique nutrient and bioactive profile that appears to play an important role in reducing LDL oxidation, hence decreasing LDL atherogenicity.”

Recipe
  • One cup of organic spinach
  • ½ banana
  • 1 organic avocado
  • 8oz of water
  • ¼ cup of organic almonds
