Avoid Depression with Omega 3’s

By now we know that Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to keep our inflammation down in order to not only reduce pain symptoms, but they’re crucial for our heart health and energy levels also.  However, most people do not realize that omega-3’s can be very beneficial in order to keep our mental health in check.  The attached research examined double-blinded placebo studies when looking at the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on depression, and what they found was that there is a positive correlation with sufficient levels of omega-3 in the body and lower levels of depression.  It is important for us as healthcare practitioners to consider the person when helping them heal. Thus, it is important that we ensure the patients’ mindset and mental health are where they need to be to heal as effectively as possible.  Below are a couple quotes from the research that help summarize the findings.


“Current evidence supports the finding that omega-3 PUFAs with EPA ≥ 60% at a dosage of ≤1 g/d would have beneficial effects on depression “

“The subgroup analysis in our meta-analysis demonstrated that only both EPA-pure and EPA-major treatments had favorable effectiveness in depression improvement. This finding was consistent with that of a review by Song et al., which found that the ratio of EPA to DHA that would be most effective for depression was 2:1 or 3:1”
