Summarized Review Conclusions

This study shows us a few things when it comes to supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin d.  First, the nutrients on their own each outperformed the placebo group when it came to reducing anxiety and sleep disturbances.  Second, this effect was even greater when the nutrients were combined.  This is important as these are 2 of the 3 essential nutrients that our society is severely lacking in.  Not only did this study dive into the supplementation with these nutrients, but it was also significant in the population that they chose.  Anxiety and depression have been suggested as risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes.  This was one of the reasons why they focused heavily on those with prediabetes glucose numbers on blood tests.

“psychological distresses including long-term depression, anxiety, and stresses have been proposed as risk factors for diabetes.”

“reduced quality and quantity of sleep were linked to diabetes (Cespedesetal.,2016)”

“In conclusion, the concurrent intake of vitamin D and omega-3 improved depression, anxiety, and sleep quality in women of reproductive age with pre-diabetes and hypovitaminosis D and can therefore be recommended for improving mental health in this group of women.”

Introduction to the Research

“According to a World Health Organization report, 422 million people worldwide had diabetes in 2014, which shows a triple increase in the prevalence of this condition compared to 1980 (Roglic,2016). The global prevalence of diabetes was reported as 8.51% in 2017 (Roglic,2016).”  The number has continued to rise in those with diabetes and those that are prediabetic.  With risk factors expanding beyond diet and nutrition into anxiety and sleep disturbances, this article focused on lowering the risk by assisting with anxiety and sleep.  They focused on the co supplementation of omega-3 and vitamin d and their effect on the anxiety and sleep of prediabetic women.

Research Methodology

“The present factorial clinical trial was conducted on 168 women of reproductive age with pre-diabetes and hypovitaminosis D. These participants were selected by stratified random sampling and were assigned to four groups for 8 weeks: group 1 (placebo group), group 2 (omega-3 group), group 3 (vitamin D group), and group 4 (co-supplement group). The medication and placebo doses being two 1000-mg tablets each day for omega-3 and 50,000-IU pearls every 2 weeks for vitamin D. Fasting blood glucose and vitamin D were measured at the beginning of the study. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were completed by the participants at the start and end of the intervention.”

Research Findings

“A significant difference was observed in terms of reduction in anxiety and improvement in sleep quality in the co-supplementation compared to the other three groups (p < .05). There was also a significant difference between the group receiving both supplements and the group receiving only placebos in terms of reduction in depression and stress (p < .05).”
