Chiropractic for Low Back Pain During Pregnancy

A review of

Stuber, K. J., & Smith, D. L. (2008). Chiropractic treatment of pregnancy-related low back pain: A systematic review of the evidence. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 31(6), 447–454. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmpt.2008.06.009

Summarized Review of Conclusion:

In this study they concluded that chiropractic care was associated with decreasing or lessening the symptoms of low back pain in pregnancy patients. They found benefits for every patient who was involved in the study coming back with 50% resolution from low back pain from just spinal manipulative therapy.

Below I have referenced key quotes from this research to help summarize the results.

Quotes from the Article:

“Results from the 6 included studies showed that chiropractic care is associated with improved outcomes in pregnancy-related LBP.”

“None of the studies indicated any adverse effects or evidence of harm to either the pregnant woman or unborn child from the treatments rendered.”

Introduction to the Research

The purpose of the research was to determine if chiropractic spinal manipulative care could help pregnant women with common low back pain and symptoms of low back pain.

Research Methodology

A multimodal search strategy was conducted, including multiple database searches along with reference and journal hand searching. Studies were limited to those published in English and in a peer-reviewed journal or conference proceeding between January 1982 and July 2007. All study designs were considered except single case reports, personal narratives, and qualitative designs. Retrieved articles that met the inclusion criteria were rated for quality by using a validated and reliable checklist.

Research Findings

The biggest takeaway from this research was seeing how chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy can help pregnant women with low back pain. This is something I personally see in the office all the time, especially with sciatica issues as well. While being pregnant, the baby alters your pelvic position your pelvic position, therefore causing your low back pain to arise. To remove the interruption of the nervous system to the muscles and other organs of the body, chiropractic adjustment is the safest approach on not only the mother, but the baby  as well. Chiropractic care has been found to also help with the delivery process but manually manipulating the pelvis in position for the baby to have a safe passage way.
