Core Stability to Reduce Low Back Pain

Video by Dr. Erik Waldeland

When it comes to lower back pain, there can be a laundry list of things that can be the cause.  One of the things we see a lot in the clinic that can contribute to pain in the lower back and hips is a lack of strength in the core which can cause instability.  Having a strong core means more than just having 6-pack abs, it means that the abdominal muscles, lumbar paraspinal muscles, and oblique muscles are all functioning properly and are supporting the spine effectively.  The Dead bug exercise shown above is a great exercise to ensure all these muscles are firing properly and effectively to take pressure off the joints of the low back.  There is a ton of research that supports proper core function when it comes to avoiding low back pain, below are a couple key findings from the attached research article.

“Core stability exercises aim to improve pain and disability in cLBP increasing spinal stability, neuromuscular control, and preventing shear force that causes injury to the lumbar spine.”

“Evidence suggests that core stability is more effective than rest or no/minimal intervention and combination with other types of exercise for cLBP have shown grater efficacy.”

Pain can be multifaceted, meaning there can be several lifestyle factors that go into what we perceive as pain.  At Minnesota Chiro Health, we get very detailed on what you’re eating, how your body is moving, and how you’re managing stress, because they all play a huge role in how we feel and function on a daily basis.  Stop living with the pain and give us a call to see how we can help get you back to doing what you love.
