Core Strength and Low Back Pain
Video by Dr. Tanner Tunskey
As I tell my patients in East Dallas with low back pain, the deadbug exercise is a highly effective, low-impact movement that targets core strength and stability, crucial for overall functional fitness and limiting pain. To perform the deadbug, lie on your back with your arms extended toward the ceiling and your knees bent at 90 degrees. Slowly lower your right arm and left leg towards the floor while keeping your lower back pressed against the ground. Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite side. Maintain a controlled, steady pace throughout the exercise to maximize its benefits. This exercise is ideal for enhancing core stability because it engages the deep abdominal muscles while promoting coordination between the upper and lower body.
Research highlights the importance of core strength in improving posture and reducing the risk of injury. A strong core supports proper alignment and helps distribute forces more evenly across the spine and pelvis, thereby enhancing overall stability and reducing strain on the lower back. Studies have shown that core strengthening exercises like deadbugs can significantly improve posture and decrease the likelihood of musculoskeletal issues. Additionally, a well-developed core is essential for performing many other physical activities efficiently and safely. Incorporating deadbugs into a regular exercise routine can therefore play a key role in achieving and maintaining a balanced and healthy body.
