Core Strength for Back Pain

Video by Dr. Trent Yeomans

Low back pain will always come down to three things, the nutrition you are putting into your body, the compensations in movements that have built up over time with not facilitating and strengthening the right muscles, and how you manage your stresses on the daily. As we do with all of our patients in East Dallas, testing how well your core is functioning is a crucial part in your first visit with any doctor on the chiro health team. If your core is not bracing and protecting your spine during movement the joints and ligaments of the back will try to take the load and that when we see injuries happen. In a study by Hyun et al. (2019) they wanted to see the effect of lumbar stabilization exercises and walking stabilization exercises had on treating low back pain. They found that in all of the groups but in the stability exercise group they saw more significant improvement when it came to low back pain both chronic and acute. Here is a walking stability exercise focused on activating the core to keep you out of pain.

“Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, with a prevalence rate of 80%. In some patients, the initial acute pain may continue during a 3-month period and eventually develop into chronic LBP.”

“This study suggests that lumbar stability and waling exercises should be recommended to patients with chronic LBP because they help not only to relieve back pain but also to prevent chronic back pain through the improvement of muscle endurance.”
