Exercise for Low Back Pain
Video by Dr. Antonio Flaquer
One of the more common things we see as chiropractors is low back pain along with other symptoms patients come in with. But, what they don’t realize is the majority of low back pain doesn’t originate from the low back. A lot of low back pain usually originates from two places which is usually inactivated glutes or over working hamstrings. These muscles along with others play a big role in stability of the low back and it’s what keeps you from compensating for one side or the other. When you have one muscle overworking another muscle you have muscle imbalance which causes an alteration in the lumbar spine meaning it is pulling to one side more than the other which stops is from moving the way it needs to move. That causes the low back pain that people are experiencing and it’s something that can be fixed and taken care of from adjusting but also strengthening the inactivated muscles. Some chiropractors will tell you that all you need to do is get an adjustment and you’ll feel fine but that’s not true. You’ll feel good for maybe a day or two, but it will come right back and you’ll be in this constant cycle of it never getting better. Exercise is key since muscles, ligaments and tendons attach to the vertebrae and they are what help a joint move the way it needs to. This is why it’s so important to put the two together and not just do one or the other.
It’s essential to make sure you continue to exercise and do strength training along with getting adjusted. That’s how you maintain a healthy lifestyle and make sure pain or discomfort doesn’t take over and make you start all over where you first started. So make sure you’re getting adjusted, but make sure you’re also exercising and keeping up with your movement of your body.
