Exercises for Scoliosis

As Chiropractors in East Dallas, we help keep balance to the spine and surrounding muscles, which is especially important in conditions like scoliosis. Scoliosis, particularly adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), involves a lateral curvature and sometimes rotation of the spine, which can create muscular imbalances: one side of the paraspinal muscles may be overactive, while the other is under-activated. Research suggests that targeted exercises — including side-bending and side-bridge movements — can help correct these imbalances, improve spinal alignment, and potentially slow curvature progression.

A 2015 paper on the Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis (SEAS) found that exercises emphasizing controlled lateral shifting and side-bridge activation contributed significantly to postural correction and spinal stabilization. In SEAS, these movements promote asymmetric muscle engagement to counteract the dominant convex side of a scoliotic curve, thereby helping to rebalance strength between sides.

Furthermore, a 2023 meta-analysis of exercise interventions in AIS showed that three-dimensional (3D) corrective exercises — which often include side-bend or lateral stabilization components — reduced the Cobb angle by an average of ~3–4 degrees, outperforming conventional therapies. This suggests that consistent, scoliosis-specific exercise can have a meaningful structural effect over time.

Additionally, a study on muscle activation in scoliosis-specific exercises demonstrated that lateral (side-bend) exercises using resistance bands (TheraBand) significantly increased muscle activation on both the concave and convex sides of the curve, more than non-specific exercises. By activating weaker muscle groups on the concave side, side-bending helps support spinal realignment and enhances neuromuscular control, which is key in scoliosis rehabilitation.

Bottom line: Side-bend exercises — when prescribed in a scoliosis-specific, three-dimensional program — can support curve correction, improve muscle symmetry, and enhance spinal stability. They are a safe, evidence-based component of conservative scoliosis management, particularly in younger patients with mild to moderate curves.
