Exercise to Reduce Mental Stress
Shared by Dr. Bryan Stephens
There are three things that I discuss with patients when talking about the cause of their neck or back pain. Movement, Nutrition, and Stress. The first two are often understood pretty quickly. When thinking of health, we all know we need to have a good diet and exercise. The last, while becoming more well known for overall health, can still affect the overall tension and pain patients experience. This is why I consistently explain the benefits of a stress relieving routine at home. One of the things I mention, is getting out and going for a walk. Along with the physical benefits of walking, there are mental components too. This was even more solidified when listening to the Joe Rogan podcast last week where he was talking with Russell Brand. The topic came up and they brought up some new research out of South Australia and how physical activity was 1.5 times more effective than medication in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and distress.
“Our review shows that physical activity interventions can significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in all clinical populations, with some groups showing even greater signs of improvement.”
“We also found that all types of physical activity and exercise were beneficial, including aerobic exercise such as walking, resistance training, Pilates, and yoga.”
These results underline the basis of what we talk about in the clinic. Whether it is movement, nutrition, or stress management, if our body is lacking in any of these areas, it adds undue stress and inflammation which can have a further reach than just neck and back pain. If you get anything from this, get out for a walk and maintain that routine. It does more than just get your heart pumping.
