Exercise to Relieve Shoulder Pain
Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens
I have had multiple patients recently, in our East Dallas office, with shoulder pain and tenderness. It has stemmed from the imbalance they have had with their rotator cuff. This imbalance develops over time with repetitive motion and improper posture. The body learns those habits and develops biomechanical failures to overcome the problems throughout the kinetic chain. Essentially, when something doesn’t move the way it should, something else in the body has to take up the slack. This changes up the regular movement pattern that should take place and ends up creating areas of restriction in the joints, tension in some muscles, weakness in other muscles, and overall stress on the joints which creates inflammation. This inflammation is what causes the pain that people feel in their necks and backs. This is why chiropractic is so essential. It helps improve the movement of the joints and help eliminate the restrictions that build up. It is also not the only thing required to change the kinetic chain. Corrective exercises are needed to retrain the body into proper motion and balanced strength. It is the combination of exercises, chiropractic adjustments, and curve correction that is required to make a lasting change on the structure of the spine and eliminate the neck pain and back pain that develop.
Referring to the imbalance of muscles I mentioned above, when they happen for extended periods of time, you can notice a loss of range of motion. This means you can’t move as far as you once did due to pain or restriction. The rotation of the shoulder is incredibly important and if one side is strengthened more than the other, it can create pain. One exercise I have had to work on with my patients is one to focus on touching the back of your hand to your low back against a resistance band. This resisted movement helps build motion and strength in the shoulder to aid with lowering the pain.
“Glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) is one of the most important factors influencing injury risk in the arm of overhead athletes.”
