Green Smoothie to Decrease Headaches
Video by Dr. Trent Yeomans
Lately I have had multiple new patients in East Dallas come to the clinic with headaches. Headaches are something that can absolutely be fixed and something that people deal with for years until it gets to a point where it starts to prevent them from doing things. When it comes to me helping my patients I always look into their nutriton that they are putting into their body, what muscles are tight and ristricted in their neck as well as what joints are not moving properly, and lastly how they are managing their stresses on the daily. All these things are what can cause headaches but of course how we can go about fixing it. With nutrition its important to get enough electrolytes with water so your body has the proper hydration to get the nutrients into the muscles and joints to allow the body to heal. One of the major electrolytes that have been proven to help with headaches is Magnesium. In a Systematic review over multiple randomized controlled trials by Chiu et al. (2016) they wanted to see the effect of taking magnesium to reduce migraines.
They found that when patients were experiencing a migraine and received either an intravenous injection of magnesium or an oral tablet they saw a significant reduction of the migraine within 15-45 minutes. While this study is focused on taking magnesium while having a migraine I think the implication is definitely there on already having the proper levels of magnesium in your body to prevent it in the first place. Here is a green drink recipe with loads of magnesium from spinach and almonds to keep the migraines down and keep you out of pain.
“Migraine is a common public health concern in contemporary society, with a prevalence rate of 11.7%. Migraine is one of the leading causes of disability and has been associated with increased health care expense as well as impaired health-related quality of life. Therefore, finding effective approaches for migraine relief is a high priority in clinical settings.”
“We confirmed that intravenous magnesium has beneficial effects in relieving acute migraine attacks and that oral magnesium supplements alleviate the frequency and intensity of migraine. Thus, we suggest that intravenous and oral magnesium should be considered as adjunctive therapies for managing acute migraine attacks and the prophylaxis of migraines, respectively.”
Recipe
- One cup of organic spinach
- ½ Banana
- ½ Green Apple
- 8oz of water
- ¼ cup of organic Almonds
