Eliminating Inflammation Eliminates Pain!
Commentary by Dr. Anthony Vasile
Grass finished vs Grain finished meat-
Remember Paleo should never be a diet because diets consistently fail. It should be more of a guideline to eating cleaner and healthier. Everyone responds to foods differently. If you are having digestive issues or want to figure out what foods work best for you it is important to do an elimination diet and heal your gut first.
The difference in quality between grass fed/finished beef and grain finished is debated from the aspect of taste but not human health. We need to be careful and aware of these differences; most grass-fed meat is fattened up with grain the last month and it completely changes the essential fatty acid profile from Omega 3’s to Omega 6. It is important to look for the word grass finished to ensure the best quality when choosing for your health and weight.
The biggest difference is separated into the two types and the amounts of essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6. We know that the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 should be 1:1. But in our current society the average person gets about a 20:1 ratio. This leads to chronic inflammation being caused by our diets. This change is an effort lower the cost of food production. Knowing that most of our chronic diseases are rooted in inflammation addressing this topic is vitally important to work towards homeostasis and health. Grass fed/finished beef contains much higher amounts of Omega 3 essential fatty acids compared to grain fed which has higher levels of Omega 6. When it comes to human health our brain function, body composition and overall health rely on the proper level of Omega 3 as an essential nutrient. Grass fed/grass finished meat has much higher levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from their natural food source, grass, that a cow is meant to eat to be healthy.(1) Not only are grain fed cows more deficient in nutrients but the cows themselves often become unhealthy during feeding and processing. Many conventionally raised cows are then treated with antibiotics to combat the sickness from being fed the wrong foods. We are what we eat! And remember, Healthy Eating Eliminates Pain!
It is safe to say that grass-fed/finished meat is the best way for us to consume beef due to the high levels of omega 3’s, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. I highly recommend Butcherbox as a company if you want to start taking your health into your hands by eating this high-quality nutritious meat. Enjoy the recipe.
