Improve Your Balance and Posture
Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens
One of the things we measure in our East Dallas clinic when performing an exam on someone with back pain is balance. Walking barefoot, often referred to as “earthing” or “grounding,” has gained attention in recent years for its potential physical, neurological, and psychological benefits. I recognize that while modern footwear protects us from environmental hazards, going barefoot can support natural movement patterns and overall wellness.
Walking barefoot allows the foot to move in a more natural and unrestricted manner. It strengthens the intrinsic muscles of the foot, improves proprioception (body awareness), and enhances balance and stability. When barefoot, the foot strikes the ground more gently, promoting a healthier gait and reducing the risk of joint stress commonly associated with heel-striking in cushioned shoes.
Footwear often alters posture by elevating the heel and restricting toe movement. Going barefoot encourages a more upright posture and distributes weight more evenly through the body, which may reduce strain on the knees, hips, and lower back. Over time, individuals may experience improved joint alignment and muscle function, especially in the lower extremities.
The soles of the feet are densely packed with nerve endings. Walking barefoot provides rich sensory input to the brain, which can enhance motor control and coordination. This stimulation is particularly beneficial for children’s development and older adults seeking to maintain balance and prevent falls.
Emerging research suggests that direct contact with natural surfaces—like grass, sand, or soil—may facilitate the absorption of free electrons from the earth, which can have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Grounding has been linked to reduced cortisol levels, improved sleep, and decreased stress and anxiety.
“Walking decreases the risk or severity of various health outcomes such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cognitive impairment and dementia, while also improving mental well-being, sleep, and longevity.”
