Improving Shoulder Strength
Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens
As Chiropractors in East Dallas one of the issues we see in our office is shoulder pain due to instability. The Arnold press is a powerful and versatile shoulder exercise that offers several unique benefits for shoulder development and overall upper-body strength. Named after bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger, this movement is a variation of the traditional overhead dumbbell press, with an added rotational component that increases its effectiveness.
One of the primary benefits of the Arnold press is its ability to target all three heads of the deltoid—the anterior (front), lateral (side), and posterior (rear). Unlike the standard overhead press, which primarily works the front and side delts, the rotational motion of the Arnold press engages the rear delts as well. This leads to more balanced shoulder development, which can enhance both aesthetics and function.
The rotational movement also increases the time under tension for the shoulder muscles, which can stimulate greater muscle growth (hypertrophy). This makes the Arnold press especially effective for bodybuilders and those looking to improve shoulder size and definition. Additionally, the movement pattern closely mimics everyday activities and athletic motions, contributing to better functional strength and joint stability.
Another key advantage of the Arnold press is that it promotes shoulder mobility and stability. The controlled rotation challenges the stabilizing muscles of the rotator cuff, which can help prevent injuries and improve overall joint health. This makes it a useful addition to a strength training program for athletes or individuals recovering from minor shoulder issues—though it should be done with proper form and moderate weight.
Finally, the Arnold press can be performed with relatively light weights and still produce significant results, due to the increased range of motion and muscle activation. This makes it a suitable exercise for a wide range of fitness levels.
