Inflammation Related to Back Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

Lifestyle determines the inflammation found in our body which relates to neck pain, back pain, and our overall health. This also pertains to the nutrition we put into our body. While beneficial in many ways, fruits are often still high in sugars and calories. I have seen it in the past where patients would tell me how healthy they were eating and mention all the fruit smoothies they were drinking yet were having trouble losing weight. Coconut is a fruit that is low in sugar, but high in fat and protein. As strange as it may seem, yes, the coconut is a fruit and is helpful in adding satiety to the smoothie without adding the extra carbohydrates from sugars.

Coconut can be a great addition or food to keep in mind for those on a low carb, paleo, or gluten free diet because of the lack of sugar found in it. Also, the type of fat found in coconuts are known as medium chain triglycerides which, when present in the gut, are quickly used as energy instead of stored in fat cells.

“Dietary MCT, taken alone or with other supplements (such as prebiotics, probiotics, organic acids, etc.) could be used as anti-obesity interventions, in regards to their capacity to prevent intestinal permeability/endotoxemia by remodeling gut microbiota, and to prevent unhealthy storage by improving the lipid catabolism/anabolism balance”
