Core Exercise to Limit Low Back Pain
Video by Dr. Erik Waldeland
We talk about it all the time, but the core plays a very important role in stabilizing the low back, avoiding injuries and limiting pain. The “core” centers around the abs, but there are multiple other very small muscles that can be included in that category that are equally as important to train and strengthen. The move shown in the attached video highlights a more advanced movement that can be modified if needed but focuses on total core strengthening with a balance and stability component as well. The research is very clear that proper core strength is one of the main things needed to limit low back pain, and it is something that we include for almost every patient that we get in the clinic experiencing low back pain.
“The results of this study illustrate that clinical and therapeutic effects of core stabilization exercise program over the period of six weeks are more effective in terms of reduction in pain, compared to routine physical therapy exercise for similar duration.”
“The prevalence of LBP in adults has been well documented with a life-time prevalence of over 70%, one year period prevalence of over 50% and a point prevalence of over 20%”
Proper core function and strength of the stabilizers is one key factor in people getting out of pain and being more comfortable at work or while working out. Our main goal is to ensure not only that your muscles are activating and holding your structure well, but also that your joints and functioning and moving sufficiently to support you if you are sitting for long periods of time.
