Protein for Back Pain Recovery
Shared by Dr. Antonio Flaquer
As Chiropractors in East Dallas, we often talk about how starting your day with high-protein snacks can help stabilize energy, support muscle recovery, and reduce inflammation—key factors in managing back pain and staying active. Protein-rich snacks in the morning can play a powerful role in stabilizing energy, improving satiety, and supporting muscle recovery — and morning protein balls offer an easy, nutrient-dense way to get those benefits. Research consistently shows that consuming adequate protein early in the day helps regulate appetite-related hormones. One study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a high-protein breakfast significantly reduced ghrelin levels (the hormone that makes you feel hungry) and improved satiety throughout the morning.
Another review in Nutrients highlights that morning protein intake helps stabilize blood sugar and improves metabolic responses over the course of the day, pointing to benefits in energy regulation and sustained cognitive performance.
Protein balls also help support muscle repair and lean body mass, which is especially important if you’re running 20–30 miles per week. Studies indicate that spreading protein throughout the day — starting with breakfast — increases muscle protein synthesis and helps support performance and recovery.
Beyond the protein itself, protein balls often include ingredients like oats (rich in beta-glucans for heart health), nut butters (healthy fats for slow energy release), chia or flax (fiber and omega-3s), and honey (a natural carbohydrate source). This combination supports both immediate fuel and sustained energy — without the blood sugar spike that comes with pastries or sugary breakfast foods.
