Reduce Inflammation to Limit Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

As a Chiropractor, I am always looking for ways to help my patients lower inflammation which leads to neck and back pain. Along with proper motion and managing stress, a daily Green Smoothie is one of the easiest ways to lower inflammation. Every week I make a batch of green smoothies form my patients in East Dallas and I’m always looking for different ingredients with nutrients that I know will help reduce inflammation and limit neck and back pain. I came across something last week while grocery shopping that I had never considered putting in a green smoothie in the past. This is something that I have had in the house for years and remains one of the only plants that I have successfully kept alive with my poor gardening track record, aloe. I have often used it for help with skin burns and never considered blending it up…until now.

we have found that aloe vera gel has anti-oxidant properties and inhibitory effects on colorectal prostaglandin E2 and interleukin-8 production

Langmead, Louise, Richard J. Makins, and David S. Rampton. “Anti‐inflammatory effects of aloe vera gel in human colorectal mucosa in vitro.” Alimentary pharmacology & therapeutics 19.5 (2004): 521-527.

“Use of Aloe vera extract in pre-diabetic patients, could revert impaired blood glucose within four weeks, but after eight weeks could alleviate their abnormal lipid profile.”

Alinejad-Mofrad S, Foadoddini M, Saadatjoo SA, Shayesteh M. Improvement of glucose and lipid profile status with Aloe vera in pre-diabetic subjects: a randomized controlled-trial. J Diabetes Metab Disord. 2015 Apr 9;14:22. doi: 10.1186/s40200-015-0137-2. PMID: 25883909; PMCID: PMC4399423.

As I started looking into it, I started noticing aloe more often in waters and other drinks that I had overlooked in the store in the past.  Come to find out, aloe is nutritious to eat as well.  Once the skin is removed, the aloe juice can be blended with water and is very high in antioxidants and vitamin c.  The antioxidants help reduce the inflammation caused by oxidative stress in the body from environmental factors such as smoke, food pesticides, and other toxins.  It has also been shown to have some antibacterial properties as well to assist the immune system’s defenses.

At the end of the day, there is never a magic food or pill that will keep you healthy.  It is a lifestyle centered around 3 things: regular exercise, proper nutrition, and stress management.  If you can consistently work on these things, you will find yourself staying healthier.
