Relieve Back Pain with Yoga

Video by Dr. Justin Thompson

In the dynamic world of yoga, the deep sprinter’s lunge stretch emerges as a powerful tool for unlocking tight hip flexors and enhancing flexibility. This is a stretch I often show my patients in East Dallas with low back pain. To perform this stretch, start in a high plank position, step one foot forward to the outside of one of your hands, and lower your back knee to the ground. Sink your hips toward the mat, feeling a gentle stretch in the hip flexor of the back leg. To the best of your ability, sink your chest to the mat. You can lean on your forearms if you can not sink all the way down. This stretch not only increases hip mobility but also alleviates tension built up from prolonged periods of sitting, aiding in reducing discomfort and enhancing overall range of motion. By regularly incorporating hip-opening stretches like the deep sprinter’s lunge into your yoga or stretching practice, you can cultivate greater ease in movement and a deeper connection with your body.

Attached below is a research article that explores the benefit of incorporating various methods of hip flexor stretching into your routines. Give this a shot and let us know how it feels! Movement and stretching are just pieces to the puzzle that is health so if you are still struggling with pain or motion, give us a call.
