Relieve Stress and Tight Muscles

I have a lot of patients that ask me what they can do to help relieve pain and tight muscles when they are at home. I will recommend ice and certain stretches. But one of my favorite and most helpful recommendations is taking a hot Epsom salt bath with a few drops of essential oils. Baths are extremely, simple, effective, relaxing and the magnesium from the Epsom salt melts away tight muscles. The bath can also restore depleted magnesium stores in the body which can help improve mood.

Various minerals are important for good health. Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic processes, including protein and DNA synthesis, blood pressure, serum glucose control, and detoxification channels. Magnesium is needed for potassium absorption, and is essential for nerve, muscle, and heart function. I have attached a research article that shows how Epsom salt can actually help with individuals dealing with hypertension.

It is nice when we can do something that helps improve our health in multiple ways. An Epsom salt bath not only replenishes a key nutrient, but also is great for the management of stress. It accomplishes this by creating an environment of relaxation for muscles and the mind. If you have never taken an Epsom bath before I highly recommend giving it a try. Managing stress is one factor for what it takes to get the body to a state of homeostasis. It is important to keep eating well, supplementing with a high-quality omega 3 essential fatty acid, exercising daily, and receiving regular chiropractic adjustments to keep the spine healthy.
