Shoulder Stability Exercise

Video by Dr. Justin Thompson

At our East Dallas chiropractic office, we often recommend simple at-home exercises like the Wall Angel to help reduce neck, shoulder, and upper back pain while improving posture and movement. One exercise shown to be especially effective is the Wall Angel Slider, which targets the muscles that support your shoulder blade (scapula) and shoulder joint. These muscles are often weak or stiff when you experience pain or poor posture, leading to discomfort and limited range of motion. The Wall Angel Slider works in a “reverse motion,” where you keep your wrists, elbows, and back against a wall and gently slide your body down and back up, rather than lifting your arms overhead. This method reduces strain on the upper shoulder muscles, encourages proper movement patterns, and provides tactile feedback—meaning your body can better sense the correct alignment—helping retrain your posture and movement.

Research shows that even a short, two-week at-home program of performing the Wall Angel Slider just three times a week can significantly improve shoulder blade mobility and shoulder rotation, which are key for daily activities like reaching overhead, lifting, or even typing at a desk. Improved shoulder mechanics also reduce the strain on the neck and upper back, which often compensate when the shoulders aren’t moving efficiently. By activating the right muscles while gently stretching others, this exercise can help restore balance to your upper body, decrease pain, and make your shoulders, upper back, and neck feel more stable and comfortable. The best part is that it’s simple to do at home, requires no special equipment other than a wall, and can be gradually adjusted to your comfort level. Incorporating this type of corrective exercise into your routine empowers you to take control of your upper-body health, protect against future injuries, and move through your day with less pain and more confidence.
