Strength Training and Anxiety

Resistance training, commonly known as weightlifting or strength training, has emerged not only as a means to sculpt muscles but also as a potent tool in combating anxiety. Research indicates that engaging in regular resistance training can significantly alleviate symptoms of anxiety. This form of exercise not only enhances physical strength but also promotes mental resilience. The physiological response to resistance training, including the release of endorphins and reduction of cortisol levels, contributes to a sense of well-being and calmness, countering the effects of anxiety.

Moreover, resistance training offers individuals a structured routine and a sense of accomplishment as they progress in their fitness journey. The focus required during weightlifting sessions can act as a distraction from anxious thoughts, fostering mindfulness and concentration. As individuals witness improvements in their strength and physique, they often experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence, further diminishing anxiety symptoms. Thus, incorporating resistance training into one’s lifestyle can serve as a powerful adjunctive therapy for managing anxiety, promoting both physical and mental health.

“RET significantly improves anxiety symptoms among both healthy participants and participants with a physical or mental illness. Improvements were not moderated by sex, or based on features of RET. Future trials should compare RET to other empirically-supported therapies for anxiety.”
