Stretch for Wrist Pain
Video by Dr. Justin Thompson
Wrist extensor flexibility is crucial for anyone who relies on strong, pain-free grip and upper limb function—whether you’re an athlete, office worker, or manual laborer. Wrist Pain is something we see all the time in our clinic in East Dallas. Tightness in the wrist extensors, particularly the extensor carpi radialis brevis, can contribute to conditions like lateral elbow tendinopathy (tennis elbow), which disrupts daily activities and athletic performance. Incorporating targeted stretching for these muscles not only helps relieve discomfort but also supports optimal function throughout the upper kinetic chain, from the wrist to the shoulder.
A highly effective stretch for the wrist extensors involves extending your arm in front of you with the elbow straight, palm facing down. With your opposite hand, gently pull the fingers and wrist downward and inward until you feel a stretch along the top of your forearm. Hold this position for 15–30 seconds, repeating several times on each side.
Research shows that static stretching of the wrist extensors, especially when combined with eccentric exercises, can significantly reduce pain and improve function in those with lateral elbow tendinopathy—particularly when performed under professional supervision for best results. Regularly practicing this stretch can help maintain wrist health, prevent overuse injuries, and support the entire kinetic chain of the upper limb.
