Sunlight to Improve Mental Health
Shared by Dr. Tanner Tunskey

As a Chiropractor I know the three most important components to staying healthy and out of pain are moving well, eating well and managing stress. Morning sunlight plays a vital role in regulating our mood, sleep patterns, and overall mental health. Exposure to natural light in the morning helps stimulate the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of happiness and well-being. This natural boost can significantly improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Conversely, a lack of sunlight exposure can lead to imbalances in serotonin levels, potentially contributing to mood disorders. As I tell my patients in East Dallas, incorporating just a few minutes of sunlight into your morning routine can set a positive tone for the day ahead, fostering a greater sense of emotional resilience.
In addition to enhancing mood, morning sunlight is crucial for regulating our circadian rhythms—the internal biological clocks that govern sleep-wake cycles. Exposure to bright light in the morning signals the body to produce melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep regulation. By aligning our light exposure with natural daylight, we can improve sleep quality and duration. Studies have shown that individuals who spend time outdoors in the morning experience better sleep patterns, leading to more restorative rest and increased alertness throughout the day. This connection between sunlight and sleep underscores the importance of making time for morning light exposure.
Finally, the mental health benefits of morning sunlight extend beyond mood enhancement and sleep regulation. Natural light has been linked to increased cognitive function and improved focus. It helps reduce stress levels and enhances feelings of calm and relaxation. For individuals dealing with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or general feelings of lethargy, morning sunlight can be particularly beneficial. By taking advantage of the sun’s rays, we not only nurture our mental health but also cultivate a healthier lifestyle overall. Making a conscious effort to spend time outdoors in the morning can lead to a significant improvement in both mental well-being and quality of life.
