Glute Exercise to Reduce Back Pain
Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens
While back pain, neck pain, and headaches are usually the main things people think of when they think of what chiropractic can help, there is much more to it. I have had numerous patients in our East Dallas office come in for help with their extremities instead. Ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, etc. are joints that follow Hilton’s Law just like the other joints throughout the body. Proper motion has to be present in the joint to allow the nerve to communicate properly with the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and sensations of everything around that joint. I have currently had more patients present with hip pain going into their low back rather than it coming just from the low back and radiating into the hip. In this case, I have had to help patients strengthen up the hip and stabilize the surrounding areas to help remove the pain and keep it from coming back.
One of these exercises focuses on the abduction of the hip while standing. There are three parts to this exercise. Start by standing with a resistance band around the knees in a partial squat position. Then rotate the right leg and bring the knee in and rotate it back to starting position. Follow that with the left leg and finally both legs together. This will aid in hip external rotation and strengthening.
“participants who performed hip strengthening exercises had significantly improved in pain and disability”
Santamaría, Gema, et al. “Effect of hip muscle strengthening exercises on pain and disability in patients with non-specific low back pain—a systematic review.” Sports 11.9 (2023): 167.
“In conclusion, the addition of hip muscle strengthening exercises iterating interacted with LBP, effectively improving pain and disability.”

At the end of the day, the goal is to put the joints through full range of motion with resistance. This helps keep the inflammation that leads to neck pain, back pain, hip pain, etc. down. This along with proper nutrition and stress management is what it takes to be healthy!
