Vitamin D to Help Reduce Inflammation
Shared by Dr. Trent Yeomans
Vitamin D is an important nutrient that can help reduce pain and inflammation in the body. That’s why in our office in East Dallas it is an essential tool we use to get patients out of pain not only faster but keep them out of pain longer. While it’s well known for helping to keep bones strong, it also plays a key role in controlling inflammation. Inflammation is your body’s natural response to injury or illness, but when it becomes too much or lasts too long, it can cause pain and damage to tissues. Vitamin D helps to keep this balance in check, preventing excessive inflammation that can lead to conditions like arthritis or muscle pain.
You can get Vitamin D from certain foods like fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy, and your skin can make Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. In a study done by Hahn et al. they looked at the effect of vitamin D supplementation over a 5 year span and they found that the group who took vitamin d had a 22% decrease in autoimmune diseases. Getting the proper nutrition in your body is essential in not only getting you out of pain but keeping lifestyle diseases away.
‘Autoimmune diseases, characterized by an inflammatory autoimmune response to self-tissues, are the third leading cause of morbidity in the industrialized world and a leading cause of mortality among women.1 2 Autoimmune diseases are chronic conditions with increasing prevalence with age and major societal and economic burdens due to a lack of effective treatment.”
“This study of more than 25000 older adults in the US provides evidence that daily supplementation with 2000 IU/day vitamin D or a combination of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids for five years reduces autoimmune disease incidence.”
